For writing
Claude is the usual pick for long, careful drafts. ChatGPT covers a wider ecosystem; both can revise a section in a side canvas (Artifacts vs Canvas). Rekdan is a simpler chat workspace with three model tiers and memory.

Claude or ChatGPT for chat-based debugging. In the repo or editor: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or Copilot. DeepSeek is worth trying when cost-per-token matters more than polish.
Budget decides this one more than features. DeepSeek and Mistral Le Chat's free tiers are the least restrictive if cost is the only constraint. Rekdan's Free plan is a simple option if you want to avoid Google's paid tiers.
Nothing in this list is fully open source in the traditional sense. DeepSeek publishes open model weights and can be self-hosted, which is the closest option here; Mistral open-sources some of its smaller models too. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Rekdan are all closed.
Still the default most people reach for first — strong at both writing and code, with years of GPTs and plugins behind it, plus voice and image when you want a polished all-in-one chat.
From Free / $8/mo
Excellent for writing and coding when quality matters — follows long, detailed instructions well, and often pushes back when something's off. Consistently near the top for careful drafts and review.
From Free / $20/mo
An answer engine built around live web search, with a cited source on nearly every claim — strongest here for "what's true right now."

The selling point is where it's hosted: EU infrastructure and data handling for real residency requirements.

Reasoning performance at a fraction of big-three price — the chat app is free with fair-use throttling at peak hours.
From Free
