For writing
If you're leaving Claude for writing, ChatGPT is the closest peer for long drafts plus Canvas. Rekdan is a simpler chat workspace if you want three model tiers and memory without a plugin layer.

For chat-based debugging, ChatGPT or Rekdan's Ragnarök tier are solid peers. For work in the repo or editor: Codex, Cursor, or Copilot.
Budget decides this one more than features. DeepSeek and Mistral Le Chat's free tiers are the least restrictive if cost is the only constraint. Rekdan's Free plan is a simple option if you want to avoid Anthropic's paid tiers.
Nothing in this list is fully open source in the traditional sense. DeepSeek publishes open model weights and can be self-hosted, which is the closest option here; Mistral open-sources some of its smaller models too. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Rekdan are all closed.
Still the default most people reach for first — strong at both writing and code, with years of GPTs and plugins behind it, plus voice and image when you want a polished all-in-one chat.
